A soundproofing experiment

We wanted to see which materials were best at muffling sound. First we had to make sure our test was fair by making sure everything stayed the same apart from the materials being tested. We realised we had to keep the same sound source and remain the same distance from it. We used the same number of layers every time we wrapped the sound source.

We found that the cardboard and the fabric muffled the sound best.

Creating sound and stopping it!

This week we have made string telephones.

We had great fun testing them out!

We found rhat sound travels along the string and the cans amplify the sound. If someone holds the string the vibration is blocked and the sound can't get through. If the string is slack it can't vibrate and again the phone won't work.

We also found the bigger the cans the better the sound!

Autumn 2 Sounds Fun!

This half term our topic is all about sound. We began by travelling to different parts of the school and listening carefully. We tried to identify the sources of sound.
We thought of lots of questions that would help us to discover more about sound and how we hear,

How is sound made?
How does it travel?
Why is sound invisible?
Can you stop sound?
What different types of musical instruments are there?
How do instruments make music?

We will be using the internet and  information texts to find answers.

The following video will tell you more about sound and how we hear it.

Start of the year.

Welcome to Morpurgo Base!

In the first half of the Autumn term
our topic was 'How I work'.
We began by talking about learning styles and how we learn best. We created our class charter to ensure that our class is a happy and safe learning environment for everyone.
Then we turned our attention to how our bodies work. We looked at the different food groups and found out how each group benefits our body.

Then we designed and made healthy pizzas.

When we ate the pizza we wondered what happened to it as it travelled through the body.

This is an example of our findings.

Monday's Beach Trip

On Monday we will be taking our annual trip to the beach. It looks as though the weather is going to be lovely so please remember that your child will need protection against the sun. This means that they must have sun cream on and that they should bring a hat. None of the children will be going in the sea. There will be plenty of staff and parent helpers on hand to ensure that we have a safe and fun day.

Sports Day

We had the most amazing day yesterday with many of the children in our class smashing records left, right and centre. We had records broken by Oliver in two different distances and Lily smashed the long distance time from several years ago. We also had some great distances for the throwing and the long jump. We were lucky enough to have a really sunny day for the event and the children all supported each other beautifully, there was some true sportsmanship on the field. We hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did.

French Week

This week is French week In Soul Base. We are learning about France as a country and immersing ourselves in the language. We have started to have simple conversations to greet each other and find out about each other. We have looked at which countries around the world speak french and have even learnt songs about french numbers and applied our knowledge to mental addition. We have started to learn a french song ready for the performance and cafe on Friday afternoon.

We will be ready to share our learning with you (weather permitting) outside on our patio just after 2.30pm on Friday - be prepared to order your croissant and chocolat chaud in french please!

Leeson House

Earlier this term we visited Leeson House Field Centre and had the most amazing time. We had adventures in Corfe Castle and heard all about the history and ghost stories of the ruins - we even acted out some of the stories with costumes. From the castle we walked up to the village of Kingston through some beautiful countryside in the sunshine.

For the next two days we spent alot of our time getting very wet as the weather was rather unkind to us. We soldiered on and still walked around the surrounding countryside learning about the smugglers of Dorset and how they operated in times gone by.

We looked at fossils and learned about food chains and local rock formations. We made natural art and even managed to sit quietly enough in the woods to get some bird spotting done. Our last morning was spent pond dipping and we caught a great crested newt - very rare!

The food, as always, was fabulous and one of the children generously provided us with Birthday cakes on the second evening so that we could celebrate her 9th Birthday with her - thank you Mrs Anderson, they were delicious.

Monday 25 January 2016

This week we are continuing to look at Viking life and study the story and words of the famous poem Beowolf. We are writing poems that follow the pattern of an ancient kenning and immersing ourselves in Viking life on Wednesday when we have a historian coming in to spend the day with us.

Please could all the children come in on Wednesday 27th January dressed as a viking. This doesn't mean going out to buy anything special - an oversized, adult T-shirt over trousers would be great as a tunic and anything that serves as a simple belt would make it even better. In terms of footwear any boots or plain shoes would be ideal. I hope that the children are looking forward to the day, it should be great fun!

If anyone wants to come and help please let me know.
